What Is a Chakra?

Chakras are energy centers in the body that originate from ancient Indian spiritual traditions.

The word “chakra” means “wheel” in Sanskrit, and each chakra is thought to spin like a wheel, distributing life force energy (also known as prana) throughout the body. There are seven main chakras, each associated with different physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our being.

When these chakras are balanced, we feel aligned, vibrant, and at peace. When blocked, however, we may experience emotional or physical dis-ease.

What Is the Root Chakra?

The root chakra, or Muladhara, is the first of the seven chakras and is located at the base of the spine.

This chakra is associated with your sense of safety, stability, survival, and connection to the Earth. It governs your basic needs—food, shelter, health, and financial security—as well as your feelings of being grounded and present in your body.

Signs of an imbalanced or blocked root chakra include:

  • Anxiety or chronic fear

  • Financial instability

  • Trouble focusing or feeling “scattered”

  • Feeling disconnected from your body

  • Lower back pain or issues with your legs and feet

When the root chakra is open and balanced, we feel secure, rooted, and ready to build a life from a stable foundation.

So how do we bring healing to this essential energy center?

Now we’ll explore six powerful ways to heal and balance the root chakra naturally.

Each practice is designed to help you reconnect with your body, feel more grounded in your daily life, and release fear or instability that may be blocking your energy flow.

These 6 methods are for everyone-whether you are a beginner and just starting your chakra healing journey or deepening your self-care practice, these root chakra healing techniques will support you in building a solid foundation—emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

1. Practice Grounding to Reconnect with the Earth

One of the most effective ways to heal the root chakra is through grounding, also called “earthing.” (There’s a documentary called The Earthing Movie, which reveals the scientific phenomenon of how we can heal our bodies by doing the simplest thing that a person can do… standing barefoot on the earth.)

Grounding means physically and energetically connecting to the Earth to stabilize your energy.

Grounding Activities to Heal the Root Chakra:

  • Walk barefoot on natural surfaces like grass, soil, or sand

  • Sit or lie under a tree and consciously breathe

  • Tend a garden or care for houseplants

  • Visualize roots growing from your feet into the Earth

Why it works: Grounding regulates your nervous system, supports emotional stability, and activates the Earth element that governs the root chakra. It’s a simple, free, and deeply nourishing practice.

2. Use Root Chakra Meditation and Affirmations

Meditation for root chakra healing can help you reconnect with your inner safety and calm. Start by sitting or lying in a relaxed position, closing your eyes, and imagining a glowing red light at the base of your spine.

Root Chakra Affirmations to Repeat:

  • I am safe and grounded.

  • I trust life and myself.

  • I am supported by the Earth.

  • I have a right to be here and take up space.

You can also incorporate sound healing by chanting the root chakra’s seed sound, LAM, during meditation.

Tip: Daily repetition of affirmations rewires the subconscious mind and helps rebuild a foundation of safety from within.

3. Try Art Therapy for Root Chakra Balance

For creative and introspective women, art therapy for chakra healing is a beautiful way to connect with your emotions and express what’s below the surface. Use art as a tool to explore your sense of security, belonging, and personal history.

Root Chakra Art Therapy Ideas:

  • Create with clay or natural materials to feel more connected to the Earth

  • Draw a red mandala to activate focus and grounding

  • Make a collage called “My Foundation” using images that represent family, roots, home, or stability

  • Paint your fears and transform them into images of strength

Why this helps: Art bypasses the logical brain and taps into the body’s wisdom. It helps process deep-rooted fears and opens space for healing and reconnection.

4. Eat Root Chakra-Healing Foods

Food is energy, and the root chakra thrives on grounding, nourishing, Earth-based foods.

You might not believe me, but the best way to find out if this works is by trying it out! Choosing the right foods can support your healing on a physical and energetic level.

Foods That Support the Root Chakra:

  • Root vegetables: carrots, beets, potatoes, radishes

  • Red-colored fruits: apples, strawberries, cherries

  • Protein-rich foods: lentils, beans, nuts (or organic meats if you eat them)

  • Warm, hearty meals: soups, stews, roasted vegetables

Mindful eating tip: Before eating, pause and thank the Earth for your food. Savor each bite slowly. Eating with intention helps you feel more present, nourished, and grounded.

5. Move Your Body with Intention

Physical movement is crucial for releasing blocked energy in the root chakra, especially since this chakra governs the legs, feet, and spine.

Root Chakra Movement Practices:

  • Yoga poses like Mountain Pose, Warrior I, and Child’s Pose

  • Dance therapy to tribal or drum music to activate lower-body energy

  • Walking meditation where you focus on each step and connect to your breath

  • Stretching and body tapping to bring awareness to your feet and legs

Why it’s powerful: Mindful movement helps you reclaim your body, especially if trauma, anxiety, or disconnection have created a sense of unease in your physical form.

6. Create a Safe and Nurturing Home Environment

Your outer environment reflects your inner world. One of the most overlooked but effective root chakra healing practices is making your space feel safe, warm, and secure.

Ideas to Ground Your Space:

  • Declutter and clean with mindfulness

  • Add natural elements like wood, crystals (like hematite or red jasper), and plants

  • Use red tones in pillows, rugs, or candles

  • Diffuse grounding essential oils like vetiver, patchouli, or cedarwood

  • Light candles and create cozy spaces for rest and reflection

Bonus tip: Set up a “root chakra altar” with stones, affirmations, and grounding objects to give you a visual reminder of your healing.
